I posted another recipe on here before, but as with all things, we evolve. This particular mat cleaner recipe is one we’ve perfected over time here at TYR HQ, and it’s the best for good smells and all-round cleaning abilities.
I’m gonna take a guess at saying you put your mat through its paces; throwing it in and out of your car to take to class, sweating all over it when you get there, and let’s not mention what’s on the floor at the community centre you practice at…
Yeah. It can get *seriously* gross up in here. We sweat all over our favourite Lululemons but we wash ’em, right? (I bloody hope so.) Sooooo it’s probably about time you whip up a batch of yoga mat cleaner, right?
Don’t fret though. This is the easiest thing in the world to make.
I’d recommend a mega clean about once a year or more frequently depending on how regularly you practice. And depending on the type of mat you have, you might be able to throw it in the washer. Job done. Or maybe just get good and friendly with a bowl of hot, soapy water and a washing line on a sunny day.
But between those proper thorough washes let’s keep those germs (and bad smells) to a minimum. Here’s how:
– A spray bottle
– Witch hazel
– Essential oils. For this one, my favourites right now are citronella, tea tree and lavender.
How to make it: 1. Use your judgement here, the size of the bottle you’re using dictates the amount of witch hazel to use. I’d say go for about 7 parts water to 1 part witch hazel.
2. Then add your essential oils! You’ll only need around 4 drops each.
3. Fill your bottle to the top with water.
And that’s it! Spray onto your mat whenever you feel inspired, then wipe and go! Sometimes I even like to just spray and leave it on a few minutes before I practice for all the good smells. Here’s to extra clean, shiny mats!
Enjoy your practice,
