As of writing this, we’re basically in lockdown in the UK. That means no traveling, no hanging with your fam, no yoga studios.

Yep, we’ve had to put up the closed signs temporarily and it was a super hard decision to make. As always, though, we’re about making the best of a crappy situation!

One of our values here at TYR is connection. To ourselves, each other, our planet. Not only that, we think it’s one of 6 ways to keep sane when we’re forced into isolation (more on the other five later), and something we probably shouldn’t take for granted once we’re back into a regular routine.

But, when we’re stuck inside, how the hell do we stay connected?

Here’s some of the best ways to keep it fresh.

1. Zoom. Here at TYR we’re using Zoom to stream our entire timetable, as well as some awesome socials (did someone say a community game of charades!?). Zoom is like a phone call, but you get video, too. For sessions up to 40 minutes in length, it’s totally free.

My favourite idea so far: organise a meet-up with your mates, everyone bake a cake (bonus points for another fun activity). Grab a slice and a cuppa and put the world to rights.

Other ideas: dinner party, movie night, games night, date night. First dates via Zoom? Go on. I dare you.

2. Create a shared Google doc. This can be focussed on what Netflix shows you need to all be watching to later catch up on over Zoom. Or, maybe for the kids to stay connected to older generations, note down the wildlife that comes into the garden every day, a journal of activities, or get them to write a story. Get creative – let Google docs be a place where you can connect to the everyday of the people you love.

3. Give ’em a ring. If, like me, you’ve got older relatives who just don’t Zoom, make sure to schedule in time to pick up the phone. Simple. And why not ask for their help with something? Everyone’s gonna be glad to feel useful over the next few weeks. Ask your grandma for her cake-baking tips and let her bake with you over the phone. Or make it about gardening or sewing. You get the gist.

4. A book club. Choose your own method for this one – Zoom, Facetime, Skype, over the phone… Even if you’re not super bookish, gather your people and choose a book everyone will get something from. It could be anything! Set a time to read the book then connect to discuss (and drink wine – v. important step).

5. Netflix Party. Because watching TV with your mates doesn’t have to end. This is an extension for Chrome and gets you all watching the same TV show at the same time. Anyone for rewatching The Walking Dead with me!?

Can we all just take a minute to recognise that this is a brilliant time in human history to be in lockdown!? We’ve got amazing entertainment at our fingertips, Amazon delivery drivers (thanks, guys), and all these brilliant tools to help us stay connected to the people we love.
